President Takeda's comment on the decision on host city of the 2020 Games

7 September 2013

Tokyo is honoured and humbled by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to award us the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is with an incredible sense of excitement that we express our thanks to the IOC and the wider International Sports Movement. The Olympic Family has put its faith in our great city to deliver the memorable Games we have promised, and we will not let them down. With no doubt, this will be a memorable event for the every member of the Olympic Family, every athlete and every spectator.

I would like to congratulate both Istanbul and Madrid for their exceptional campaigns, which were truly a wonderful reflection on the Olympic Movement and their respective nations. We have enjoyed a healthy rivalry, constantly united under the Olympic Values of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship.

The most recent public polls revealed that 92 per cent of the Japanese population supported Tokyo's hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, so I think it's safe to say 116 million Japanese people are smiling right now. We thank each one of those individuals for their support of Tokyo 2020 throughout this extraordinary two-year journey. In addition, we extend our deep appreciation to everyone involved with the Bid, including Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe; Governor of Tokyo Naoki Inose; and our devoted ambassadors and athlete supporters.

Tokyo is eager to begin to put in place our plans for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tokyo 2020 will be a superb occasion in the very heart of our dynamic capital city. We take on this immense responsibility both humbly and seriously, and will work hard over the next seven years to organise and host what is sure to be the world's greatest event in 2020.
